Art can sometimes seem like a grand purchase; however, we come into contact with art every day and in many different forms.

From the graphic design art of every day product packaging to the old masters we see displayed in museums and country houses. As humans we are drawn to it and for every artist there is someone who sees the world the same way as they do and appreciates and values the art that is created.

So why should you collect art for yourself?

There’s so much art on display when you look. Everything from the digital art you see on your phone, through to the grand masters in the national galleries. However, there’s nothing quite like finding the work of an artist that speaks to your inner most thoughts. Its as if they can see into your soul through their work. Engaging with you on an emotional level.

Top tips for starting your own art collection

There really are no rules when it comes to buying art for your own enjoyment. Unless you are buying for commercial reasons you should choose pieces that you like. And by that, I mean you. And only you. As the curator of your own collection the art you choose should resonate with you. It really doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. They are not you after all!

Do however spend some time looking at art to see what you like. What appeals to you? What styles do you like?

And work out how much you are comfortable spending. The cost of a piece of art will have taken into account both materials and time. Time the artist has spent in training and time the artist has spent creating the art you buy.

Pointers for first-time art buyers

When you’re starting your collection make the time to visit galleries, museums, art fairs, and take the time to educate yourself about art. Read books, look online, see what you are drawn to, to really get to know your own tastes.

If your budget allows do think about buying original or limited editions.

Places where you can go to buy art

There are many opportunities to buy art in every town and city. There’s no one specific or ‘best’ place to go. Check out local art fairs and galleries. And also look online. Find an artist whose work you love and support them.
