Heavenly Light – Doombar, Cornwall

The Doom bar in northern Cornwall is a shifting sandbank at the mouth of the Camel Estuary.

It’s known for being the cause of hundreds of shipwrecks due to the way it creates breaking waves and shallow water, both of which are hazardous to vessels sailing into the bay.

Local folklore says that the Bar was created by the Mermaid of Padstow who cursed the harbour after being shot by a local. She created the treacherous sandbank which has been noted as causing over 600 recorded incidents, and has been a hazard to navigation for centuries, including the 1816 wrecking of HMS Whiting.

Yet despite its dramatic folklore and dangers, it is also a place of peace and tranquillity. Sun drenched beaches and gentle waters. Just don’t be fooled and set sail into these waters.
